How To Listen To A Flash Briefing

Smart Speaker 101: Alexa, What’s a Flash Briefing?

More than 60 million Americans own Alexa or another smart speaker, according to a survey by NPR and Edison Research. That’s 24% of Americans age 18 or older. But challenges remain with discoverability. So how can you unlock your Alexa and find great content like Flash Briefings? Let’s answer some basic questions.

What’s a flash briefing?

Flash briefings are pre-recorded audio reports on Amazon Alexa. They’re meant to inform, entertain or enlighten without a large time investment. They are perfect for our multitasking generation. Within minutes you have the news or information you care about — all through your voice command.

Why should you use flash briefings?

Flash briefings are a sure-fire way to stay caught up. They cover lots of topics. And they are customizable. You can hear what you want when you want it.

It’s easier than ever to follow the big stories of the day by subscribing to your favorite flash briefings and asking the Alexa app to play it for you. The best part? It’s hands-free. Once you set up your preferences or settings in the app, you can catch up on the news while your hands or eyes are busy.

How do you set up a flash briefing on Amazon Alexa?

Just follow these steps:

  1. Download or Open the Amazon Alexa app on your mobile device.
  2. Click the three lines in the upper left hand corner to access the Settings menu.
  3. Select Settings and then Flash Briefing
  4. Press the magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner to Search.
  5. Press Enable To Use to add your Flash Briefing.
  6. To change your Flash Briefing order, select Edit and move your content up and down.
  7. When set up, just say: Alexa, play my flash briefing. Or Alexa, play the news.

When should you use a flash briefing?

Almost any time of the day is perfect. Really depends on your daily routine. Imagine this: You’re getting ready for the day and you want to know what’s going on but you don’t have the time to read or watch the news. In just seconds, you can ask your smart speaker to play your favorite flash briefings so you can listen while you make breakfast, get the kids ready, brush your teeth, and feed the dog.

Some flash briefings — like Marketplace Minute — update several times a day so you get stories you need-to-know from sunrise to sunset.

We invite you to add these to your flash briefing playlist:

Westwood One Daily News | “Alexa, Play Westwood One Daily News.”
